Jaguar-Land Rover to Add More 1,100 New Jobs in Britain

It always pleasant to report about the creation of new jobs, but much more so in the midst of an economic crisis that has engulfed the whole of Europe. 

 

The news comes from the Jaguar Land Rover group (JLR), which announced today that it will expand its workforce at its manufacturing facility in Castle Bromwich, UK, to support the launch of new Jaguar models including the XF Sportbrake that goes on sale at the end of 2012.

The Tata Motors-controlled automaker said that more than 1,100 new jobs are being created, adding that a recruitment campaign for production operators was launched on Wednesday.

"We have embarked on the most ambitious recruitment campaign in the company’s history, hiring 8,000 people in the last two years," commented Des Thurlby, HR Director at JLR.

 

"We provide high quality training and development for all of our employees so this latest announcement for 1,100 jobs is great news for the West Midlands and the UK supply chain."

 

During the first six months of the year, Jaguar has sold more than 29,000 vehicles globally representing a 19 per cent increase over the same period last year. According to Jaguar, all key markets, including China, UK, USA and Europe, have delivered year on year sales improvements.

2013 Jaguar XF gets New 2.0-liter Turbo and 3.0-liter Supercharged Gasoline and 2.2-liter Diesel Engines

Jaguar's 2013 model year-mania continues with the XF series that gains a similar suite of updates to the larger XJ saloon that we told you about in a previous posting and then some more, including the introduction of the new Sportbrake that will start from £31,940 when it goes on sale in the UK later this year. 

 

As with the XJ, the XF continues without any alterations to its design for the new model year, but with many changes under the hood.

The executive model's engine lineup is expanded with two new forced induction petrol powerplants, a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 delivering 335hp (340PS) and 450Nm (332 lb-ft) that replaces in some markets the naturally aspirated 5.0-litre V8, and a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four rated at 237hp (240PS) and 340Nm (251 lb-ft). 

 

The 2.2-liter four-cylinder diesel range is now available in 161hp (163PS) and 197hp (200 PS) outputs with the latter replacing the existing 187hp (190PS) output engine.

 

These engines join the existing line-up of 3.0-litre V6 Turbodiesel and Supercharged 5.0-litre V8 petrols. 

We should mention that not all engines will be available to all markets (i.e. the 2.0-liter turbo petrol in the UK), while the estate version of the XF will be offered at launch exclusively with diesel powerplants. 

 

For 2013, Jaguar is also expanding the use of its new 8-speed automatic transmission with a start and stop system to all gasoline and diesel engines across the range improving emissions on the V6 Diesel engines by six per cent and on the supercharged V8 petrol by up to 11 percent. 

 

The range topping 503hp (510PS) XFR can now be enhanced with an optionally available new Speed Pack that is equipped with revised engine and gearbox calibration, a new front aero splitter and a new rear wing. With this package, the XFR can reach an increased limited top speed of 174mph (280km/h) instead of 155km/h (250km/h). 

 

Jaguar has also replaced the Bowers and Wilkins system with a new Meridian audio system.

As with the 2013 XJ, Jaguar is expected to release country-specific details on the XF in the coming months.

New Jaguar XJ_e Plug-in Hybrid Study Returns up to 73.4mpg US or 3.2lt/100km

Jaguar chose the Goodwood Festival of Speed that runs from June 28 to July 1 for the world premiere of a new technology study based on the XJ limousine.
 
The new XJ_e was created to exhibit Jaguar-Land Rover's (JLR) capabilities and future plans as in theory, the concept's plug-in hybrid drivetrain can be used in most of the group's models. The study follows other hybrid research demonstrators from JLR including the Limo Green and Range_e vehicles.

Before we dive into more details, we should note that the XJ_e project was part funded by the UK Government’s Technology Strategy Board through the REEVolution project, and engineered in partnership with several UK technology companies "to help develop expertise for ultra-low carbon vehicles within the supply chain".

The XJ_e is fitted with a parallel, plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) system, which combines the JLR's 2.0-litre turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine with a hybridised 8-speed automatic transmission for a combined output of 329hp (334PS). 
 
The hybrid system makes use of a 69kW motor/generator and a 12.8kWh Lithium Ion battery pack, which can be fully charged by a 240V domestic supply in about four hours. 
 
Jaguar says the XJ_e can run on pure electricity for up to 40km (25miles), on gasoline power alone, or a combination of both. 
 
The plug-in hybrid version of the XJ is capable of completing the 0-100km/h (62mph) sprint in under 6.5 seconds and has a limited top speed of 250km/h (150mph). 
 
According to the British company, the XJ_e achieves CO2 emissions of "less than 75g/km" and an average fuel consumption of 3.2lt/100km (88.3mpg UK or 73.4mpg US). 
 
The XJ_e will be displayed in the FoS-TECH Technology Pavilion at Goodwood over the weekend.

Jaguar Land Rover Official Showcase DC100 & C-X16
